A man walked into a greasy spoon, sat down, and ordered coffee. As he sipped it, he looked out the window and said, "It looks like rain."

"Nope," said the waitress, "it’s coffee."

The jury finally returned to the courtroom. The judge asked the foreman if a decision had been reached. The foreman said, "Yes, sir. In our opinion, we don’t think he did it because we don’t believe he was there. But we think he’d have done it if he’d had a shot at it!"

A sheepherder visited the big city zoo and stopped at the baboon’s cage.

"That must a cowboy," he told his son. "The seat of his pants is worn."

OMAHA COMMISSIONERS MEET.

County Clerk S.A. Stucky, County Collector C. A. Emry, of Carthage, C. M. Manker, of Webb City, and ex-mayor John H. Taylor, of Joplin, all commissioners from Missouri to arrange this state’s exhibit at the Trans Mississippi exposition at Omaha next summer, held an informal meeting in the court house yesterday afternoon.

The commissioners met informally to start the ball rolling and devise plans, etc. The commissioners of the state will be expected to raise $50,000 for the Missouri building, to secure space in various other buildings, etc., and this money will be raised by popular subscriptions.

The commissioners from this county will, after conservatively estimating the amount necessary to fittingly display Jasper county’s resources, ask the county court to appropriate the necessary amount. The commissioners anticipate no trouble whatever in securing the necessary appropriation.

VanGilder to Chair Memorial Hall Long Range Planning Committee.

The initial meeting of the Memorial Hall Long Range Planning Committee took place last Thursday evening at the Hall. The thirteen member Committee was appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Council to define the role of the Hall and the resources needed to meet those expectations.

After a tour of the facility the Committee discussed initial notion of the focus and direction of the Committee. Committee members will be provided with data pertaining to the current scheduling and usage of the Hall, along with fee structures and rental policies.

The idea of the Committee sprang from a grant by the Boylan Foundation of $20,000 to be used for improvements to the Hall.

The Committee will meet on the first and third Thursday of the month at 7:30 in Memorial Hall. The target date for completing the charge of the Committee was set for Memorial Day, May 25, 1998. Chair VanGilder asked members to being a list of suggestions to the next meeting.

Mornin',

As you can see from the ads startin’ to appear in this paper, the City political season has officially opened.

So far, the Council races have shown little activity. Some are preparin’ for the run, but ever’one seems ta be waitin’ for the last couple a weeks to get things movin’.

The Mayor’s race seems ta be heatin’ up a mite as old political rivals behind the scenes seem ta be pickin’ sides.

Bein’ the first contested race for Mayor in a few years, it seems the spark for competition is still alive.

I understand that the barber shop talk has heated up considerable and of course spills over to the coffee shop discussions. Democracy at its best. A lively consideration of all aspects of the candidate’s respective luggage.

I’m hopin’ the exchanges don’t get too serious, after all, it’s only politics.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

The Super Handyman

If you've got a lawn, chances are you have a lawn mower. Every year you drag it out and put it to work. If the dragging part is getting to be too much for you, you might try adding a handle to the front of the housing.

With a power drill, it's pretty easy to add a screen-door handle right on the front of the mower, so that you can pick it up using the handle in one hand and the mower's large, lower handle in the other. It really makes sense for smaller mowers.

You might have tried picking up the mower that way at some point, but the front edge or rake is no fun to grab. Try the handle and see if it doesn't's make things just a little bit less of a drag.

Remember, before working under the housing, remove the spark plug so that the mower cannot start accidentally.

Dear. Al & Kelly: I never though that epoxy could make such a mess, but I was mixing some and spilled a couple of drops onto the countertop where I was working. I had some vinegar handy so I grabbed it. Sure enough, it worked right away. I could just see trying to explain that mess to my wife. It seems vinegar has baled me out many times. Just thought I should pass this info on to you all and your other messy readers. - H.I.

A SUPER HINT - Left your garden hose out in the yard during the last freeze? Poke a few more holes into it and turn your "leaker" into a drip irrigator for your shrub beds or garden.
