today's laugh

"We had a prominent actor as a guest at our house the other evening."

"Gracious! didn't you find it hard to entertain him?"

"Oh, no, we just handed him a bunch of photographs and a number of his own was among them. He amused himself for hours."

He (in the telephone booth)-"I want a box for two."

Voice (at the other end)-"Sorry, but we don't have boxes for two."

He-"But aren't you the box office of the theater?"

Voice-"No, we are the undertakers."

An unwelcome guest is one of the best things going.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Mayor Harrington's Say.

He Wants the Lighting Contract Endorsed at the Polls.

That this city has been illy lighted in the past is admitted by all; that it should be well lighted in the future ought equally to be the desire of every citizen. That there should be an honest difference of opinion as to the best means of accomplishing that result is to be expected, but this fact is self-evident; that our interests as a community are in most cases identical; hence the merits and demerits of a proposition for lighting should be well considered.

If it be found deficient it should suffer defeat at the poles, but it should not be opposed for political or personal reasons or through unthinking prejudice. Is the present plan the best one to adopt? Here we divide. Many insist that gas in any form will not answer. Gas lights have been bad; hence they must always be bad; prejudice is hard to over come.

Jasper County Road Improvements Noted.

Missouri Department of Transportation District Engineer Richard Walter said he has witnessed the result of the voter approved road tax in Jasper County over the last twelve years.

"We wish our roads and bridges had improved as much as yours have," Walter told the conclave of elected officials gathered at the Carthage City Hall last Tuesday. The conclave consists of county and city elected officials and representatives from the Southwest Missouri area. They meet once a month to discuss matters common to all.

Walter also told the group that SW Missouri has the third largest population growth in the state, increasing 8.2% over the last six years. He said MODOT has identified $1.3 billion in needs for the 11-county region served by the Joplin office alone.

In an interview after the meeting, Walter told the Mornin' Mail that the $1 million in federal funding for the Fairview/Highway 71 interchange is in line. Discussion is underway to determine what portion of the additional $1 million needed to complete the project will be paid by the State and/or the City.

Congratulations Bill Snow On His Brushstrokes 'Best of Show' Award!!

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

This last weekend was the annual Brushstrokes art show in Joplin. Our congratulations to all the award winners!! We heard Bill Snow won the Best of Show award and that Jerry Ellis and Andy Thomas also won awards. Way to go, guys!! We also heard it was much better this year as they held the art show before the art auction..this way the artists had a much larger crowd at their exhibits. Hope all the participating artists had a great show!!

Speaking of a great show....Jerry Ellis will be our next exhibiting artist!! Yeah!! We will be hosting an opening reception on November 20th from 6-8 p.m. We hope to have a great turn out for Jerry!! He will be showing all originals and even some brand new, never before seen paintings!! Is that not just too cool!? We are sooo excited about this show!! We will be serving some very delicious hors d'oeuvers!! Yeah!! Good friends, great art and food!! A winning combination!!

We have had the greatest idea! On this day, November 20th, during the reception that evening.. we will be offering our Geranium House prints for a mere 50 dollar....AND ...this will include an individual membership for one year!! IF you are already a member..then this fabulous print can be yours for only 35 dollars!! Such a deal !! BUT...only during the Ellis reception. After that the cost will be 50 dollars for the print alone. This great offer comes to you from our membership committee and we thank them for making these prints available at this great price!

While we're thanking people we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to H.J. (Jake) at the Mornin' Mail and to Jo Ellis at the Carthage Press for their wonderful and unbiased coverage of our latest and scariest adventure. As you may have already read we have been offered the premises of the late Katherine Hyde. This wonderful woman left her home and her estate to support the arts. IF we are fortunate enough to be able to move there this will be the most important thing that has happened to artCentral in a very long time.

This is an opportunity for artCentral to have a PERMANENT HOME...no more moving..no more searching for a building to purchase..no more worrying about being able to pay our utilities if we ever did buy a building.

artCentral could have perpetual life. Long after we have gone artCentral can still be there..in the same place from now until.....?

If you live in that neighborhood we will be around to visit with you pretty soon...we hope everyone will be supportive and help us out with this latest endeavor. There will be several meetings with zoning people and, of course, eventually with the City Council. Please help us establish a permanent home. We do need one desperately.

Any questions or comments please call 358-4404 and leave us a message. Anyone wanting to help us with this please feel free to join us!! We thank you for your support. Now more than ever.

More.............next week.

Mornin',

At the meetin' of the area elected officials the other day, it was brought up that Joplin has an annual budget of around $45 million. In comparison, the County runs on around $15 million, plus the $3 million spend on roads and bridges each year. The City of Carthage operates at around $5 million, CW&EP and the R-9 School system work in approximately the $15 million range. That's comin' close to a hunderd million a year rollin' around in the county economy. A good portion of that comes from sales tax. Joplin, like Carthage, gets a major chunk of its income from shoppers from all over the area. The County Roads and Bridges sales tax likewise uses out-of-area shoppers to pay for improvements we get to enjoy ever'day. 'Course we locals get to pay our share too. Over dependence on sales tax revenue can be risky, but for the time bein', tell 'em to shop till they drop.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

The more years I stand on these feet, the more they ache and the more varicose veins and spider veins crop up. If I would stop every couple of hours and put my feet up and change my shoes once a day during work, those two things would help a lot, but....there just doesn't seem to be the time for that...although complaining takes no less time!

In many of today's books there are suggested remedies for varicous veins. Among those are the following:

* Vitamin K, as described by Earl Mindell in the Vitamin Bible, helps prevent internal bleeding and hemorrhages and promotes proper blood clotting. It has been mentioned for keeping the veins strong. I have been using the creme and find that it is helping with the small spider veins when I use it consistently. One of my customers has been helped tremendously and states that he has less pain than he has had in years.

* Butchers Broomis supposed to help tone and tighten the circulatory system. I have found it takes some of the pain from the pressure off my legs.

* Recently in Dr. Gott's column (sometimes we agree!) he mentions horeschestnut extract as a remedy for "heavy leg syndrome." Feedback has been good.

Important to drink plenty of fluids this time of year. Drinking small amount at one time is easier for some people. I have been told many times that the thirstier your body is the more fluid it retains.
