today's laugh

Sheriff—"Did you catch the auto thief?"

Deputy— "He was a lucky bird. We had chased him only a mile when our 500 miles was up and we had to stop and change the oil."

First Hobo—"I’m like the poet, I long for the wings of a dove."

Second Ditto—"Huh! Right now I’d rather have the breast of a chicken, ‘long with a couple’a drumsticks."

An alarm clock is a strange device that makes people "rise and whine."

Improving a Home.

D.H. Paulding is improving his recently purchased residence at 1128 South Main street. A kitchen is being added in the rear at the southeast corner, two bedrooms are being thrown into one and closets are added. The house is being painted outside and in and plastering and papering is also to be done. Mr. Paulding thinks he will be able to move into the house by the first of the year.

John Perry, a former Jasper county boy, who left here in 1884, came in today and is visiting with his old friend Judge Westly Ralston. Mr. Perry has been working for years in the great copper works at Bisby, Arizona, and has some beautiful specimens of ore from that place. He is surprised and pleased at the great improvement noticeable in Carthage since he was here. He says he will remain here until the first of May visiting friends and looking over the country.

County Cuts Personnel.

The Jasper County Commission voted 2-1 to accept County Prosecuting Attorney Dean Dankelson’s offer to take over the responsibility of County Counselor as of January 1, 2000. Commissioners Ben Johnson and Anna Ruth Crampton voted for, Presiding Commissioner Danny Hensley voted against. Hensley favored retaining Jim Spradling. Spradling has served as County Counselor for the last several years.

Crampton sited the move as a way to save money. Dankelson has told the Commission his office can handle the job without more funding.

All of the Commissioners spoke highly of the job Spradling has done for the County.

"I’d just like to say that Jim has done a really, really good job," said Hensley. "He (Dankelson) is going to have some really big shoes to fill."

Crampton and Johnson agreed.

"My comment is that Jim will be more than just missed," said Johnson. "He has experience in the office and has a lot of knowledge that is important to the County. As the County is getting poorer at this time, we can’t afford a Cadillac."

Major Work Being Done For Kids Studio and Our Pottery Room !!

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Here it is...........one week before Christmas !!! Have you gotten all of you shopping done ?? What’s for dinner, ham or turkey ?? Corned beef and cabbage sounds better mmmm with potatoes and carrots !!

Everyone around here is gearing up for the season. We plan on being open until and including the 23rd. However, Penny is planning on picking up her work this Saturday. We can’t help it......it just fits her schedule better this way.

The Kids Studio aka the upstairs of the garage is coming along nicely thanks to Steve Clark and his son Eric !! They had an open spot in their work calendar so they were able to fit us in.

They have worked very hard and the place looks great !! Not only have they built walls, laid new floor, built a new ceiling complete with new joists and cut a new doorway connecting the two rooms downstairs (whew) they had to move all of our junk first!!

The upstairs was FULL of old useless junk like rotten screens, old squirrel chewed magazines, stacks and stacks of old cardboard (?) and odds and ends of old wooden moldings.

Steve cleaned the whole place up throwing the junk out a window into a dumptruck below...........two truck loads of ...stuff !!

We sure appreciate him doing that.............saved you-know-who from having to do it !!!

Then he had to move all of our precious pottery things out as well as over 100 metal folding chairs !!

Thank goodness the chairs were all stacked on a rolling thing !! Good thing his son was helping.... that potter’s wheel weights about 150 pounds !!

Anyway, the place does not look the same !!

The con-crete guys are suppose to be here soon and so are the electricians !! This is just soooo exciting !!

It looks like we might have room for three or four potter’s wheels in the garage side and lots of space for kilns, shelves, and glazing tables in the potting shed side ............... yea !! We will get a mud room yet !! Look out world....come next spring and summer we will have pottery stuff everywhere !!

The upstairs Kids Studio will have pegboard on the walls since we already own about a ton of if. We app-reciate the Underground stor-ing it all this time for us !! We at artCentral wish everyone a very Merry Chris-tmas and a safe holiday season for you and all of your loved ones !!

More ..........next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th & www. ozarkartistscolony.com under organizations.

Mornin',

You’d think there wasn’t anyone wantin’ a plain old potato chip. Even the corn chip folks are puttin’ out a fancy version of the old standby.

‘Course comin’ up with some new snack food isn’t new, they’ve been addin’ cheese to ever’thing in a sack for some time.

‘Member those little barrel shaped corn snacks with a fillin’? I haven’t seen them for a while. They were supposed ta be the snack of the future.

My favorite weird snack was those "space sticks." Supposed ta have ever’thing ya need to sustain life in space I guess. I think they sent the last package of those on that probe that crashed on Mars. Prob’ly for the best.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here it is the middle of December. Yes, Christmas and the new millennium are just around the corner. Some have suggested we may "crash" and have a return to a pace which is easier to handle and others see us maxed out by the computer age. No cash, no cards, just discs which record all the actions of our lives. Either way, we know that if our lives are in balance any change is easier to handle. Myself, I prefer the old way, not back to outhouses and wood stoves, but one at which we were happy for a washing machine that basically did our clothes for us and fast food was just a few joints and video games were not killing people but were called pinball machines...am I showing my age? Folk medicine is making a comeback. A good thing backed by some pretty serious scientific evidence.

Some of the old time remedies can’t be beat as far as safety and affordability goes. With the upcoming cold and flu season at hand it is nice to know that there are still slippery elm lozenges, horehound cough drops and soothing cups of chamomile tea. Yarrow tea may well take care of the flu with some echinacea or goldenseal added for the immune system and to fight infection. Boneset is taken in capsule form to alleviate some of the aches and pains one may feel in association with the above conditions. For a morning picker upper and a circulatory aid try this recipe: squeeze 1/2 lemon or an equivalent of bottled juice with some maple syrup and aprox. 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper in a 4 oz. glass of water. It not only warms you up on a cold day it is good for the stomach and heart. Doesn’t interfere with the nervous system like too much coffee does either. This is barely a scratch on the surface of the vault of information available on herbs. I believe in studying the tried and true methods with a pinch of logic and a glimpse of what the scientific evidence has brought forth. One thing ALL of my "old timer" teachers have ingrained in me is to not make it complicated.
