today's laugh

So your uncle was a horse thief?

No, not really. You see he had a great sense of humor and he was always talking about his wild oats, and sometimes the horses would hear him and follow him home.

Last year we had an electric Christmas.

What do you mean?

Well, my little brother got an electric train, my sister got an electric iron, my mama got an electric washing machine and papa got the electric chair.

My uncle fell into a ditch in Arizona and they never found him.

Fell into a ditch and never came out! That's ridiculous!

You mean you've never heard of the Grand Canyon?

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

A Man Named Carter Tried to End His Life at the Arlington Today.

A man named Carter locked himself in his room at the Arlington hotel some time this forenoon and turned on the gas, apparently with suicidal intent. The smell of the escaping gas attracted the notice of the employees about 1 o'clock, and Landlord Carter began a thorough search of the house. The trouble was finally traced to its source, and upon finding the door locked it was broken in and the occupant found to be in an insensible condition. Restoratives were applied and a telephone message brought a physician hurriedly to the spot. Carter was worked with for some time before he revived, but he eventually rallied.

A reporter called at the hotel but failed to gain any further information. None of his questions were answered.

No Action Taken on Airport Settlement.

The City Council will meet in its regular session tomorrow night in City Hall at 7:30. The Agenda continues to consist of typical housekeeping business.

There is no mention of the closed session of City representative of the Airport Settlement Committee last Thursday night, but Mayor Kenneth Johnson is expected to report on the meeting to the Council.

Johnson said last Friday that the Committee took no action during the closed session. He says he anticipates a meeting of the Airport Settlement Committee as a whole to further discuss the settlement proposal submitted to the City. The ASC is comprised of five members representing the City and five members representing those who have filed suit to force construction of a new aviation facility. Johnson told the Mornin' Mail that more could be accomplished if the entire committee now sits down to discuss the proposal.

The Council will have a public hearing on proposed annexation of property located at 1911 S. Baker Blvd. as requested by Evelyn E. Curry and consider a resolution to annex property at 781 S. Country Club Road.

Mornin',

It's gettin' close to the City Budget Hearin' season. The Budget Committee may get a head start tonight when they start goin' over the Departments' capital improvement requests. The situation that seems ta be generatin' the most interest initially is the fact that the Police Department is gonna need to upgrade, or more likely replace almost all of its computers before the end of the year.

The estimate I'm hearin' is somewhere around a hunderd grand. 'Course considerin' that most of the equipment was pieced together over the last ten years, there isn't much invested in the current hardware.

The is several other bigger ticket items that will be discussed I'm sure. The proposed Civil War Road improvements and the possibility of gettin' a 71 Highway/Fairview exchange are a couple. Plenty of places to spend the money, I've got the time.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin'.

The Super Handyman.

Dear Al & Kelly:

We finally switched to large plastic boxes for storage instead of plain cardboard boxes. The plastic protects our things better and moisture won't be a problem anymore.

There is one drawback: the cost. They last forever, but the initial cost was too much for us to do too much at one time. A really good plastic container that isn't so expensive is a plastic garbage can. They have snap-shut lids and cost about half of what the boxes cost, plus you can fit a lot more stuff in one. We use the garbage cans for winter or summer clothes, since we usually pack and unpack them all at once.

Shower curtains are still popular, at least for looks. They sometimes do have a problem, though, with allowing water to get around them and out on the bathroom floor.

Shower curtains - or at least the vinyl liners - used to have magnets in the hems so that they would magnetically attach to the tub. But magnets won't work on the new fiber-glass and acrylic tubs, so manufacturers don't use the magnets anymore. Velcro, however, works just as well, and you can install it yourself.

You can buy stick-on Velcro strips at hardware stores and home centers. Just apply one piece to the tub and the matching piece to the shower curtain.
