INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

A Letter Filed for Record.

An unusual filing was made this morning in the office of the county recorder. It was a letter written by Robert Southem of Sarcoxie to J. S. Culliman of Corsicana, Texas. The writer states that the letter was written at the request of Richard B. Riley and the letter explains his position on giving a lease on his farming land near Sarcoxie to Mr. Riley for mining purposes. He says that on account of so many being given to parties who have no idea of mining but simply take the land for a speculation, many tracts are tied up for years. He says he does not intend to be caught in any such situation and therefore will not at present make any leases. He says, however, that he is quite desirous of seeing that particular mining region developed and as an inducement thereto he promises and binds himself to execute a lease on the land in question as soon as the company will bring a steam drill into the neighborhood and begin work.

Recycling Recycling.

Public Works Committee Chair Bill Fortune told the Committee this week that he plans to bring up the topic of curb side recycling during next Tuesday’s regular Council meeting. The Council voted last year to implement a curb side program beginning in October of 1999.

Engineering Department Director Joe Butler told the Committee that grant funding has been received for an educational awareness program for recycling.

Fortune said he wants to make the Council aware of the progress before any money is spent on the awareness program.

The ordinance would put in place a mandatory residential fee to pay for the curb side service. The City has operated a free recycling pick up station at the old landfill for the last several months.

Mayor Kenneth Johnson, who attended the meeting, said he does not support the mandatory fee and feels that the current arrangement is working well.

Committee member Trish Burgi-Brewer wants to see the curb side program implemented. Members Charlie Bastin and H.J. Johnson oppose the mandatory fees.

Fourth Annual Carthage Relay for Life.

Teams are still forming for June 11 and 12 to be held at Central Park (rain or shine). The registration fee is $10 per person. Mornin',

There are only a couple a nights left for you to experience the Chautauqua down at the Library Gardens. It’s an opportunity to hear authentic renditions of what it was like for folks durin’ the Civil War.

The program has been made possible by the cooperation of a good portion of the organizations you hear about. The Chamber, Main Street Carthage, Victorian Carthage, the Public Library, the Powers Museum, the City, the Boylan Foundation and prob’ly a couple others I’m not aware of. Just a lot a folks workin’ together to bring Carthage a unique opportunity. The State also kicks in to make ever’thing possible.

Even if you’re not a history buff you’ve got to appreciate the effort bein’ put together by Carthage for this event.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

When asked about a child's needs for essential fatty acids (EFAs), Dr. Leo Galland, M. D. author of Superimmunity for Kids stated:

Essential fatty acids are critical in newborns, young infants and toddlers. Human breast milk is the best source of omega 3 and omega 6 for infants. Nursing mothers should supplement their diet with 1 to 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily. If you choose not to be breast-feed, try adding 5 to 10 drops of flaxseed oil & 1 drop of vit. E per bottle of infant formula. Be sure to test for allergic reaction by rubbing a small amount under child's arm....if it turns red and irritated, don't use it. About half way through weaning, begin to supplement flax oil. When your child becomes a toddler, she should receive a teaspoon of flaxseed oil a day. Adolescents should receive a tablespoon a day."

When the Dr. began to supplement flax seed oil, he observed that most children showed an improvement in the skin and hair. Eczema often improved as did symptoms like bed-wetting, hyperactivity and chronic ear and respiratory infections. Dr. Galland is also a firm believer in using flax seed oil as a preventative to inflammatory disorders. Large amounts taken to reduce inflammation of arthritis and colitis may have been prevented by daily consumption.
