today's laugh

I've had the same watch for years - runs perfectly - never loses a minute - and...

That's nothing. I dropped my watch into the Hudson River a year ago and it's been running ever since.

What - the same watch?

No the Hudson River.

Send some money or we'll all go to the poorhouse on Friday.

Wait until Saturday and I'll go with you.

My feet are cold.

Well, all you have to do is go to bed with and have a brick at your feet.

I tried that.

Did you get the brick hot?

Get it hot? It took all night just to get it warm.

Getting Ready for Work.

Mr. G. Jaeger, contractor for the city's electric plant, left last night for St. Louis to interview the Frisco managers about putting in the promised railroad switch at Carter's Park. It is hoped to have the work under full headway immediately and ground will probably be broken Saturday. It is Mr. Jaeger's plan to hurry up the Frisco switch so that material can be unloaded on the grounds and thus avoid expensive drayage.

Yesterday at the regular meeting of St. Catherine's Guild, a vote of thanks was tendered to the young people who so ably assisted in the society cake walk. The ladies fully appreciate the fact that the success of the entertainment was due to their untiring efforts.

B. L. Dorsey of Alton, Ill., and James Hull and W. W. Phillips of Danville, Ill., are in Carthage looking after mines and mining.

Public Hearing On Sidewalks Tomorrow.

A Public Hearing dealing with the proposed sidewalk maintenance and repair financial incentives ordinance will be held during the regular Public Works Committee meeting tomorrow afternoon in City Hall. The meeting starts at 5:15. Public participation is encouraged.

The proposed ordinance would provide reimbursement to property owners for approved sidewalk repairs or replacement of existing sidewalks in an amount of $1.50 per square foot. According to Engineering Department Head Joe Butler, this would amount to approximately half of the typical cost.

Committee Chair Bill Fortune reported during last week’s Council meeting that Gary Smith, of the Missouri State Forestry Department will be in attendance at the meeting. He will provide information about various solutions for sidewalk damage due to tree growth and roots. The prospect of having to remove some trees, especially in City parkways, may cause some controversy according to Fortune.

The Budget/Ways and Means Committee has proposed that $50,000 be committed by the City next year for the incentives.

Mornin',

From all indications, the City is goin’ to have some type of sidewalk repair/replacement incentives for at least the next year. The meetin’ tomorrow night may influence exactly how that setup will work and what kind of factors will be used to determine who is eligible. As it looks now, any residential property owner with sidewalks on City the parkway adjacent to their property qualify.

Accordin’ to what I understand so far, brick and stone sidewalks will still be allowed for those who want to get those back up to snuff, but the incentives will be only for concrete construction. It also won’t help pay for buildin’ a sidewalk where there is none now. If you’ve got questions or concerns, show up and speak up tomorrow evenin’ at City Hall around 5:15.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

Q: We moved into a home with a blacktop driveway that has some cracks. How can we patch these?

A: You can purchase asphalt crack filler in a cartridge for use with a caulking gun. Home centers and hardware stores carry the cartridges.

If the crack is very deep, pour in sand up to within a half-inch of the surface. That way you don't need to use so much patching material.

Above and beyond the various hooks made for pegboard, we've tried several different substitute hangers. One excellent option is the kind of hook designed for hanging draperies. It's a single hook for pleated drapes that is shaped sort of like a lower case Y or H. You can put the long end through a pegboard hole and push it down so that the V-shaped end is left in front.

Drapery hooks are sharp, so be careful. We suggest filing down the exposed point. The hooks are strong and can hold several items. If you check around, you might even find some extras lying around your house right now.

SUPER HINT- When you are finished cleaning paintbrushes, let them sit in some warm vinegar for awhile. It helps them last longer and stay more pliable.
