Teacher: Mary, what is usually used to conduct electricity?

Mary: Why. . . er. . .

Teacher: Correct. Wire is usually used to conduct electricity. Now tell the class, Sam, what is the basic unit for measuring electrical power in a light bulb.

Sam: What, sir?

Teacher: Right, Sam. The watt is the basic unit.

Carthage Girl Married in Colorado.

The Pueblo (Colo.) Chieftan of recent date says: "A beautiful wedding took place at 520 west Ninth street yesterday at 10 a.m. The contracting parties were Berry Jones of this city and Miss Julia Horn of Carthage, Mo., Rev. Thomas Stephenson officiating. The wedding took place at the home of the groom's sister, Mrs. Clarence A. Bradford. After the ceremony the party sat down to an elaborate dinner which reflected much credit upon Mrs. Bradford. Mr. Jones holds a position of trust at the Pueblo smelter and Mrs. Jones leaves many friends behind her in Missouri. Their many friends join in wishing them many years of happiness."

  Today's Feature

Attack On Proposed County Comprehensive Plan.

A contribution of $25,000 by Ms. Ethel Mae Humphreys of Joplin will fuel a campaign against the proposed County Comprehensive plan to be on the upcoming November 2 ballot.

The 48 hour notice of late expenditures was filed with the Jasper County Clerk's office on Wednesday. Thursday morning commercials were being seen on at least one Joplin TV station.

The filing names Stop Now! of Kansas City, Missouri as the committee purchasing $26,259 worth of radio and television commercial production, purchase of radio time, cable television commercial time, and broadcast television commercial time. The issue supported is "No" on Jasper County, Mo. Zoning issue/Zoning code.

There have been no filings of record by any committees supporting passage of the ballot issue.

The approval of the Comprehensive Plan would allow a zoning commission to be elected. The fifteen member body would be responsible for any zoning ordinances.

Farewell to Mary -

We will miss you, dear friend.

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Hey, hey, hey.............did you miss us last week ?! Hope so. You’d think after having done this column for over three years SOMEONE wouldn’t forget to deliver the finished piece to the appropriate places for printing !!! An old friend used to say........No brains, no headaches....guess who had no headache last week ?! Anyway, on to more important things.

For the last year and a half one of artCentral’s Board members has been fighting cancer. Mary Baumann lost her battle this last week. We want to take this opportunity to let everyone know how she touched so many lives the short time she lived here and how she supported the arts and artCentral.

Mary joined us one day out at the Geranium House. She wanted to be involved in the arts and had just moved to town. She instantly accepted a place on our Board.

Before long she was our Wednesday volunteer out there and she started her Wednesday drawing jams. Anyone wishing to get together and draw on that afternoon was welcome and each day she set up the still life and put out the drawing benches.

As she became more familiar with us she decided what artCentral needed was a life drawing class. On her own she set up the schedule, found the models and arranged each Wednesday’s sessions. Through these sessions she met a lot of artists and made a lot of friends.

We so appreciated all her work getting that program off the ground. Because of her there is a large drawing group now in Joplin.

Mary was a good friend and supported me in so many ways. Her support and words of encouragement gave me the strength and confidence needed to take on the roll of Director.

Mary was a wonderful artist. Her charcoal draw-ings from the life drawing session are great and were on display in our Member’s Gallery last spring. We will be showing more of her art in the next show.

November 12th will be the opening reception for the group show Mary put together. She invited some friends to join her in an exhibit and didn’t take no for an answer !!

Our friend is gone.....but we have some great mem-ories. She is and will be sadly missed. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family. We love you, Mary.

More.....next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th & www. ozarkartistscolony.com under organizations.

Jasper County Planning-Zoning-Chapter 64

(Noncharter First Class Counties)

If you live in Jasper County, own a vehicle, mobile home, real property or pay county taxes, please read this.

Senate Bill 64.170 (1) For the purpose of promoting the public safety, health and general welfare, to protect life and property and to prevent the construction of fire hazardous building, the county commission in all counties of the first and second (class) classification, as provided by law, is for this purpose empowered to adopt by order or ordinance regulations to control the construction, reconstruction, alteration or repair of any building or structure and any electrical wiring or electrical installation therein, and provide for the issuance of building permits and adopt regulations licensing persons, firms or corporations other than federal, state or local governments, public utilities and their contractors engaged in the business of electrical wiring or installations and provide for the inspection thereof and establish a schedule of permit, license and inspection fees and appoint a building commission to prepare the regulations, as herein provided.

64.241 (in so many words states) may prepare regulations governing the subdivision of land, plats for streets, building lines, open spaces, grading & paving, drainage & utility easements, sewers, water & other utilities.

64.320 (in so many words states) they can purchase at public expense out of the county treasury, lots, tracts & parcels of ground and land to be used as public parks, playgrounds, camping sites, recreation purposes and sanitary landfills, and may acquire property for such purposes by Eminent Domain, levy an annual tax, for planning, improvement, maintenance, operation of such lands.

If these 15 persons, have the above control of our land, our properties, our personal control of our utilities, lands, water, sewers and etc. Do we need these taken away from us at the expense of hiring all the persons, companies, corporations, employees and inspectors to carry out the above, with our tax dollars?

Please vote no!

Mornin',

Surprise!

Whether you're for or against the County Comprehensive Plan, you've gotta be intrigued by the last minute efforts of one person to defeat the proposal.

I don't know the folks involved, but I've gotta assume that this was not a last minute decision.

The tactic has prob'ly eliminated any chance for any pro groups to organize a counter attack. The only hope they have of counterin' the pressure is the fact that the Plannin' Commission held a series of Town Meetin's earlier.

I haven't seen or heard any of the ads, but I'm sure they will be intense. The fact that this is the only County wide issue on the ballot will most likely make it difficult ta get the "for" votes to the polling booth.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Not sure who or when I've been told these little tid-bits, but here they are anyway.

Coughs: Cover your mouth. Chewing on a piece of gingerroot with its antiinflammatory properties, may help you stop coughing. If that is too much, try some of the chewy variety of the candy or a cup of the tea. It also helps break up congestion. Some take the juice of an onion and garlic in hot water with some honey.

Earaches: I always heard chewing gum works well. Also mullein drops in the ear may help ease the pain and do not consume dairy products while the ear hurts. A great big yawn can sometimes ease the pressure.

Headaches: Let go of stress and don't eat foods which can aggravate a headache or eat any foods which you know you are allergic to. Problems may occur with peanuts, chocolate, caffeine, wheat or especially MSG or red wines. Often times a dose or two of magnesium may help.

Hemorrhoids: I have always found that witch hazel capsules or suppositories are most beneficial. The old remedy of buckeye salve works for some. Also constipation can aggravate hemorrhoids so using a good fiber with Plenty of fluid may help. Two cups of yarrow tea-drink one, sit in one.

An overabundance of protein and depression may go hand in hand as it can inhibit tryptophan uptake by the brain.
