today's laugh

Doctor: You're in good health Mr. Johnson, you'll live to be 80. Patient: Doc, I am 80. Doctor: See, what did I tell you.

Robber: O.K. Stick 'em down. Robbed: You mean stick 'em up. Robber: Don't confuse me, it's my first job.

She: You shouldn't be afraid of him. He's an ignorant savage and you're an educated, intelligent man. He: What do you expect me to do; beat him to death with my diploma?

INTERESTING MELANGE.

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

A Carriage Factory Secured.

For two months past the Commercial club has been working hard to secure the location of a carriage factory in Carthage. The enterprise is now a certainty for this city, and the work of putting up buildings will begin at once.

The club has for weeks been quietly corresponding and negotiating with the owners of the factory, and to the club, and particularly Maj. A. F. Lewis, its president, is due the credit of securing the enterprise. Maj. Lewis has devoted nearly all his time, without any compensation, to the work since it has been under way.

The president of the factory has been in Carthage for a week and the last details for the removal of the factory to Carthage were arranged today. The president of the factory stated to a local reporter that the necessary loan had been secured and the site furnished them and that work on the building will begin within a week.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

With all the enthusiasm for the stock car racin’ and “iron man” (which includes women competitors also), I’d like to see a competition based on the two. Row boat racin’.

It would use the traditional circle track configuration, only water, like a moat. Wouldn’t have ta be a high bank type track, flat water is difficult enough to navigate. It’s such a simple idea, I’m surprised no one has been promotin’ the idea.

Kellogg Lake would be an ideal spot to experiment with the possibility. The annual event would be a natural for some summer month. I can hear the radio ads now - The Row Boat Nationals. . .Satur-r-r-r-rday night. (splash, splash, splash in the back ground.)

The fans would show up a week early to watch the qualification rounds. Wander through the staging area admirin’ the latest in row boat technology, tryin’ to pick up ideas on how to keep their row boat bottoms in tip top shape.

I suppose the appeal is somewhat low-tech. Just a bunch a folks havin’ a good time in Carthage.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

City Land Sale Considered.

A Council bill that would declare as surplus an acre of City owned land adjoining Cedar Hill Cemetery will be in first reading at tomorrow night’s regular Council meeting. The passage of the bill would clear the way for the Council to accept bids on the property.

The process might be slowed, however, if the proposed Council bill requiring an appraisal prior to the sale of City property, scheduled to be voted on during the meeting, is passed. That bill was proposed by Council member Charlie Bastin.

The Public Works Committee had been approached by the Cemetery Association about acquiring the property, and there was some interest shown by the Committee in giving the land to the organization. City Attorney David Dally advised that it could only be sold.

Assistant City Engineer described the property as “land locked” and of little value to the City.

It was noted that the highest bid would not necessarily have to be accepted by the City.

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell and Kelly Carrell

Sponsored by Carthage Farm & Home Supply, Inc.

Dear Al: I'm a painter by trade so I go through a lot of paintbrushes. I end up throwing away a lot of them too. It's just part of the job. I do have my old favorites, though, and I try to keep them cleaned and in good shape. One thing I do after cleaning them is soak them in a little fabric softener and water before storing them. When I need the brush again, I can rinse off the stuff, and the brush is soft and ready to go. I've been doing this for years and have had nothing but good results. - A. T.

A Super Hint - If you are tying to redo some chair joints and are having trouble getting the old wood glue to loosen up, try a little warm vinegar. It works fast, is inexpensive and isn't caustic. It won't work on the newer glues, but it sure makes the old glues let go.

Q: Ever since the plumber installed a new heating element in my electric water heater, it makes a gurgling noise. It works OK, but I'm worried about the noise. What could this be? - D. R.

A: Noise in a water-heater tank can come from having the heat setting too high, thus causing steam to be created. A medium setting should correct the problem. Sediment in the tank also can cause noise. When the water supply was shut off for the work and then turned back on, the force of the water might have pushed extra sediment into the tank.
