today's laugh

"Doc, what should I take when I get run down?" "The license number."

Waiter: "Can I help you with your soup, sir?" Diner: "Help me? What do you mean?" Waiter: "Well, sir, from the sound, I thought you might wish me to drag you ashore."

INTERESTING MELANGE.

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

His Mental Arithmetic Adopted for the State.

A Big Thing Financially.

From friends of Prof. J. M. White, who are interested in school work, it is learned that his mental arithmetic has been adopted for this state by the text book commission for a period of five years. The adoption of his book is a very great honor for Prof. White.

As near as can be estimated now 150,000 copies of the book will be necessary for the use of the Missouri schools next year, and some additional copies each year for five years. It can be readily seen the adoption of the book is a good thing for Prof. White financially as well as otherwise.

The book will be used in all grades from the fourth to the high school, and, mental arithmetic has not been used heretofore and he will not be compelled to take old books in exchange. His work was selected from the typewritten copy, as the book is not yet in type.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

There are some things it’s just better not ta know.

Take makin’ hot dogs. I don’t have the slightest desire to even hear ‘bout it.

My brother worked on a farm as a kid. He was recruited to help gather up the volunteers for supper one evenin’. Didn’t eat chicken for years after that.

Had a friend a mine who didn’t know the name of the person he admired the most. Said it was that brave soul who first decided that eatin’ eggs was a good idea.

I really have no interest in the diagnoses given by the vet for someone else’s pet. I can endure human ailments, leave the cat out of detailed conversation.

There are some things that I do have an interest in, I just don’t want to see it dramatized on the tube and turned into a three hour stretch to see how much sufferin’ one audience can tolerate.

The old sayin’ that ignorance is bliss may not be as simple as it appears. There are folks who just know too much for their own good.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

Unfortunate Electrical Accident.

A response to a report of an explosion near the levy led to the Fire and Police Department discovering that Darrell Dalton died from electrocution yesterday afternoon. Apparently the truck he was working from got into a high voltage wire. Some evidence indicates Dalton may have stepped from the truck and created a ground. The truck caught on fire and the fuel tank exploded.

Power in the lines was still arching through the burnt tires when the fire crew arrived. Three fire trucks were needed to control the vehicle and surrounding grass fire.

Dalton was on the levy working for Southard Construction. He was 49 years old.

Airport Appeal Date Set.

The Missouri Court of Appeals has set Monday, September 8 as the date for oral arguments to be heard in the Myers Memorial Airport Committee vs. the City of Carthage.

The appeal was initiated after the ruling of Circuit Court Judge Baldridge that basically said that the Committee had no grounds for a suit.

The suit was filed last fall by the Committee after the City Council voted to close the Myers Memorial Airport. Efforts to get a temporary injunction failed during the last days of December and the facility was closed on December 31, 1996. Since that time, the City hired the firm of Andereck, Evans, Milne, Peace & Baumhoer of Springfield to represent the City’s position.

Attempts by the Committee to obtain a court order to keep the City from dismantling the airstrip support facilities have also failed, although the City has been reluctant to proceed with any major alterations while the suit is pending.

City Attorney David Dally has advised the Council not to remove hangers or other permanent alterations until the suit is settled.

The Budget/Ways and Means Committee is currently gathering information as to the cost of temporarily reopening the airfield in response to a Council Bill being proposed by Council member Charlie Bastin. At this time, it appears that there are five Council members in favor of the action, and others waiting to be convinced.

Proponents of the bill say that grant funding for the construction of another landing field would be possible if the Myers Park Airport was reopened. The idea of trading a portion of Myers Park for an appropriate site had been raised. A plan to build a hard-surfaced landing field with minimal structures has been proposed that is estimated to cost less than $1 million. If such a trade was possible, the cash cost would be reduced dramatically.

Council member Art Dunaway has told the Committee that the field could be reopened at a minimal expense, and could be closed again if critical property was sold at the Myers Park Development.

Local Baseball Player Off to Bahamas.

Mark Shrum, Jr. has been selected by Sringfield coach Dick Birmingham to travel to the Bahamas in a U.S.A. team made up of players from throughout the nation. The team will compete August 10-16 against island teams of Freeport and Nassau and possibly others.

Mark is a member of the Carthage High School baseball team and pitched for the 14-15 year old Senior Little League team the year they won the 1995 Missouri State Championship. Mark will be a Senior this year.

A fund has been established to help offset the expenses for the trip at Nations Bank. Donations can be made to Nations Bank in the name of Mark Shrum. (contact Janice Brummett)

Natural Nutrition

Guess What? There is more than one vitamin with ginseng in it and has been for many years. Funny how those who jump on after others have spent so much time building the bandwagon and think they actually built it because they have more notoriety. Get my drift?

Essential oils are playing an important part in treating many conditions. If yeast infections are a problem for you it has been suggested that using antifungal essential oils such as lavender, myrrh and/or a dilution of tea tree oil either in baths or rubbed on the abdominal area could lend some relief. Be sure to dilute essential oils. Good oils for dilution are apricot, avocado and almond. They can be purchased in the cooking section for a price break. Cold pressed is a must.

If you are trying to incorporate tofu into your diet and don't know how, buy a good cookbook. You will be amazed how easy it is to use. If you have tried only the stuff in aseptic packages you are missing out. Get some that is fresher and waterpacked. Fresh is a key word. Try this for a quick dish. Rinse the tofu with fresh water then marinate in small amount of tamari sauce (lower salt than soy) for a few hours. Dice up any fresh veggies you have on hand. Get the oil very hot and then throw in your tofu and veggies and cook until tender. Yummy and easy. If you have leftovers, try putting them in pita bread with some lettuce and sprouts.

The tomatoes and new potatoes are so good now but, they can aggravate an arthritic condition. If you notice aches and pains, you may be having a food reaction.
