today's laugh

Joe: Was there any money on Noah’s ark?

Moe: Yes, the duck took a bill, the frog took a green back, and the skunk took a scent.

He wrecked his car, he lost his job, and yet throughout his life, he took his troubles like a man - he blamed them on his wife!

Boss - The one who is early when you are late and late when you are early.

Girl: Would you like to take a walk?

Boy: I’d love to.

Girl: Well, don’t let me detain you.

There’s nothing like the Christmas season to put a little bounce in your checks.

Death of Lyman A. Wheeler.

Lyman A. Wheeler, 76 years of age, whose home is in South Dayton, New York, died at 8:20 o’clock Wednesday morning at the residence of D. H. Wampler, ten miles northeast of Carthage.

Mr. Wheeler had been here for sometime past settling up the estate of his brother, Alonson Wheeler. He had been ill but a few days and his death is the result of a general breaking down.

His son in New York was notified but up to Wednesday night no reply had been received. Mr. Wheeler had expressed the desire to be buried by the side of his brother in the Walnut Grove cemetery west of Jasper and his wish will probably be carried out.

Mrs. A. H. Caffee and Mrs. Hout drove over to the vicinity of Smithfield yesterday to make a two or three days visit.

Myers Park Modifications.

At Wednesday’s Public Works Committee meeting, members reviewed the final plat for the Myers Park development, discovering that a planned View Corridor running south from the circle at Marlin Perkins and George Phelps Avenues was not properly aligned on the circle.

The plat was sent back to Engineering to have the circle moved slightly to the east. As a result of centering the View Corridor on the south side, Garrison Avenue on the north side of the circle will have a small curve as it approaches the circle.

Changes will be brought back to the Committee before moving to the full Council.

Tom Moore of Tri-State Engineering reported that the Civil War Road widening project is complete. Work on the asphalt overlay which is being paid for by the County should be finished this week, weather permitting.

Moore also reviewed change orders on the CARMAR water line project totaling $25,625. The project cost is still within the amount of grant money available.

Mornin',

If ya want ta get the advantage of bein’ first name on the ballot for City office, tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. is the time to sign up.

So far there has been little indication of anyone outside of the existin’ Council members runnin’ for the April election. First Ward Henry and Fourth Ward Johnson have stated they will not be in the runnin’ this year. Two new contenders are needed in those seats for sure.

Third Ward Jackie Boyer has told the Mornin’ Mail that she will be running as will J.D. Whitledge. Whitledge was appointed to the Third Ward position and has to stand for election.

As of last week, Bill Fortune of the Second Ward was upgraded from unknown to undecided. I’m guessin’ he’ll go for it. My guess is that Fifth Ward Lujene Clark will also run for another Council term.

Hugh Overton is still the only officially declared Mayor candidate, but rumors are startin’ to circulate for other hopefuls. Twenty five signatures or twenty five bucks is all it takes. And the guts.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

The Super Handyman

Q: How can we strengthen a cracked rafter? There is no sag yet, but I’d like to be sure a problem doesn’t occur. - L. W.

A: We’d use "sister rafters" to give the cracked piece a new lease on life. Cut a pair of boards to be the same width and thickness as the rafter. They should be long enough to extend beyond the cracked area by at least a foot. Sandwich the damaged rafter between the two boards. Be sure to use nails long enough to go through the rafter and the first sister. Clinch the nails before installing the other board.

Dear Al: I recently discovered that if you hold a flashlight up close to a dark wall made of plasterboard, you can see the small bumps where the nails or screws are located along the studs. I’ve tried to locate studs for different repairs around the house with a variety of methods; this one works best. It won’t work on all walls, but it sure does work on most of mine. Knowing where those studs are really makes hanging shelves and other things a lot easier. - D. W.

A Super Hint - To keep paint can spray nozzles from clogging, fill a small container with solvent. Drop the nozzles into the solvent for a few minutes. The nozzles will be ready when you need them. If you keep a few extra nozzles, you’ll have one ready if yours should clog while you are using it.
