Boyer Calls for Speed Limit Reduction on HH Within City Limits.

Council member Jackie Boyer pushed for a continued effort to reduce the speed limit approaching the HH and 71 Highway interchange during last Tuesday’s regular Council meeting. The establishment of a school crosswalk has allowed a lowered speed limit at the new Steadley School, but according to Boyer the 55 mile per hour speed limit approaching the interchange is still unacceptable.

According to City Attorney David Dally the City cannot set speed limits on a State highway, even within the City.

Boyer requested that the City contact the State and ask for a reduced speed limit.

Dally said the State had been contacted and initially indicated the limit might be raised to 60.

"Then I suggest that we approach them again," said Boyer.

The Mayor handed the job of talking with the State to Boyer. She accepted without hesitation.

Mornin',

They say that one of the most successful campaigns in recent years is the one calling for designated drivers. Apparently accidents by drunk drivers has dropped and much of the credit is given to the awareness raised by the ads about designated drivers.

The antismoking ads also seem to have raised awareness.

I suppose it’s hard ta say if the ads caused the response or if they just reflect an attitude that is popular. Gettin’ down to it, I don’t suppose it really matters. The fact that folks are takin’ a look at life-style changes, for whatever reason, is prob’ly most significant.

‘With the comin’ new year, a lotta folks will be considerin’ resolutions for improvin’ their chances of makin’ through the year. Prob’ly the most immediate consideration would be a designated driver for the end of this year. It’s not preachin’. Just use some sense and don’t get behind the wheel if you’re not up to it. We wanna see ya next year.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

The Super Handyman

Dear Al & Kelly: I wanted to patch up a couple of badly stained areas in my older carpets before my holiday guests arrived. I came up with an idea for a super patch cutter for both the damaged areas and the new carpet patches. I used a 3-inch biscuit cutter, which I first sharpened, with my bench grinder. By putting the biscuit cutter on the carpet, it could be hammered right through the carpet and backing. I used the same step on a carpet scrap. With the nap on both carpet and scrap running in the same direction, the patch was perfect! - K. A.

Hint - If you like the look of stained glass but don’t want to replace a window, you can attach a stained-glass panel to an existing window with glue or glazer’s points.

Q: Do I have to use a glossy paint for painting my older kitchen cabinet redo project? - J. J.

A: No, it’s not a hard and fast rule. But there is a big advantage in having that sheen. A glossy surface is much easier to clean. It doesn’t have to be a high gloss; even a little shine would help.

Dear Carrells: Every year around holiday time, I dig out what is left of the old candles from the candleholders and insert all new candles. I save the old candle stubs. I take the old stubs and rub them on wooden drawers, sliding window frames and door hinges. It makes them move better and more quietly. Plus, the wax doesn’t drip and make a mess like most oils do. - T. S.
