"Do you prefer an English saddle or a Western?" "What's the difference?" "The Western saddle has a horn." "I don't intend to ride in heavy traffic."

"They say she attained her present prominence by pulling wires." "Really?" "Yes. She plays the harp."

Just about the only thing you can borrow without collateral is trouble.

Cop: Have you read the traffic rules? Motorist: Yes, what would you like to know?

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

I suppose it took more than a little convincin’ ta get folks ta give up on the horse and buggy. More than anything, it was prob’ly the idea of bein’ comfortable with a known mode of gettin’ from here to there.

Automobiles aren’t entirely the blessin’ that proponents of that industry would have liked ever’one to believe, but they did offer a lot of advantages.

The one thing that changed the most was the amount a time folks spend just walkin’. By the time ya saddled up a horse and got all set ta go, you could be most places. Nowadays, a visit to a neighbor on the other side of the block warrants takin’ the car.

A three or four block walk would seem outa the question.

‘Course one of the big advantages of car ownin’ is ya don’t have to clean out the stall. At least not near as often. Another is if ya leave the car in the garage, you don’t have ta keep puttin’ in fuel just so ya have somethin’ ta clean up later.

And, the flies aren’t near as plentiful.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

Solar Car Team Wants It All.

The local Carthage High School solar car racing team would like to not only win the 357.1 mile race from Dallas to San Antonio next week, they also want to come away from the competition with the best design award. The car was demonstrated on the Square last Friday to a small gathering of City officials and curious onlookers.

This year will be the second attempt by the team, guided by Carthage High science teacher Wayne Christian. The instructor told the Mornin’ Mail that it looks like the kids may be able to earn school credits for their efforts on the project in the near future. Currently they must accept the satisfaction of learning for learnings sake.

This year’s $25,000 car is completely new. The original vehicle, raced in 1995, was destroyed in a fire. Sponsors were again approached last summer for help in funding the project. The sponsors for the 1997 car included Pipe Systems, Inc., Peterson Manufacturing, Electric Vehicles of America, Inc., Empire District Electric Company, Howard Machine Shop, R&T Salvage, Airplane Plastics, Carthage Water & Electric Plant, Leggett & Platt, Inc., Superior Fiberglass, Beimdiek Insurance, Carmar Group, Optima Batteries, Southwest Missouri Bank, HE Williams, Infinity Lighting, and Allgeier Martin & Associates.

Team participants at this year’s race will include Matt Bohm, Micah Osborne, Alex Melin, Jason Strecker, B.J. Korn and Jon Haffiner. Christian and high school counselor Kent Harris will accompany the crew and follow the race in a traditional vehicle.

There will be eight other entrants in the national competition. Vehicles must recharge during the race and are impounded at the end of the day at each check point during the race. The solar panel alone is valued at about $12,000.

Christian said the crew may camp for a couple of the nights during the event due to lack of funds for motel rooms.

Instructor of Cosmetology Shampoo

Shampoo

Another choice to make, we have shampoos for fine hair, damaged hair, colored hair, bleached hair, natural curly hair, permed hair, dried out hair, shampoos for the scalp, shampoos for hair before swimming, shampoos for hair that is fragile and needs thickening, yes a shampoo for all seasons and reasons. Your next question would of course be, do these shampoos really do as they say they do? As a matter of fact if they are made by a professional or reputable company, they make all the difference they claim to.

To understand the purpose of a shampoo will help you determine if you are using the one that best suits your needs. Yes we want our hair clean, but is that all you can expect from your shampoo? No, if we understand that hair has a natural Ph level as skin does then we can begin to understand some of the chemistry of hair. We all know that to keep something healthy we should keep it in its natural state. Therefore, if our hair Ph is naturally a 4.5 to 5.5 and we use shampoo that has a Ph of 6.5 to 8.5, then after the shampoo we must return the hair to the natural Ph to control the health of the hair or the natural state. Water is usually a Ph of 7. So, we know that simply rinsing the hair will not be enough. In selecting a shampoo, we need to consider our math. This equation should help. Natural Ph plus water Ph = _____ - or + shampoo Ph = _____ or finished Ph level. So now, you think you need to understand possibly some more information on Ph? Same place next week ...

Intro to the Internet.

Where do all these services come from?

Services like Web pages, FTP sites, Newsgroups, E-Mail, etc., are all individual functions of these computer we call servers (or hosts). Some servers don't have many features at all, while other servers have all kinds of services available. Luckily for you and me, the servers know who they are, and they know where the other computers are as well. When you make a request for a Web page, the servers work together to help you find the server where that Web page exists.

If one computer is down between you and the server you're asking for, the other computers will help to find a path for your request to travel on. Once the path is finally resolved, the connection is made, and you see your Web page. The same is true in regards to most of the requests over the Internet.

In Review

The Internet is a huge collection of computers world wide. They are connected to each other by a method that guarantees access (provided that computer is operational and connected to the network). There are servers (also referred to as "hosts") that provide services of all types. No one person or group owns the Internet, yet there are many committees and organizations that supervise its developmental evolution.

Health Notes Health & Nutrition

Almost everyone can lose weight if she or he really wants to. At least, that’s the common wisdom. The problem lies in keeping the weight off.

“We have a weight regulating mechanism in the body,” Dr. Ulene says. “And when it is functioning normally, you are more able to maintain a healthy weight. Some people, however, have a defect in that mechanism and find it difficult to keep their weight at a healthy level. They can lose weight, but soon regain it. However, that doesn’t mean they have to resign themselves to being overweight and subject to all the health risks that come with obesity such as cardiovascular problems and adult onset diabetes. Nor should these people feel as if they’re failures if they can’t keep the weight off. As I say, obesity should be understood as a disease, not perceived as a human failing.”

As Dr. Ulene notes, you need to take the weight off in a manner that you can maintain for the rest of your life. We do this with patients who have medical problems. But too often, when someone is obese, they here, 'If you didn’t eat so much you wouldn’t be so heavy.’ These people don’t need chastising. They have a physical malfunction and they need to be put on a management program for life.
