"I got rid of that rear noise in my car," stated the motorist. "How did you do it?" "I made him sit up front with me." Customer: I warn you, I won't be able to pay for this suit for six months. Tailor: Oh that's all right, sir. Customer: Thank you. When will it be ready? Tailor: In six months, sir. First Farmer: I crossed my hens with parrots to save time. Second Farmer: Why did you do that? First Farmer: I used to waste a lot of time hunting for eggs. Now the hen comes up to me and says, "I just laid an egg - go get it."

INTERESTING MELANGE.

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

I. D. Davis, a Farmer North of Town Severely Injured.

I. D. Davis a farmer who lives on the Chas. Myers place three miles north of Carthage, was kicked by a horse yesterday and his leg broken above the knee. Mr. Davis was engaged in feeding the stock in his barn and was passing behind the horse when he was kicked. He slapped the horse lightly on the hip and spoke to him at the same time but the animal probably mistaking him for another horse kicked with the above result. Dr. F. W. Flower was called and reduced the fracture. Mr. Davis is well along in years and the hurt will probably cause him a great deal of trouble.

Chas. Huth and Wesley Bruffett will leave tomorrow morning over the Frisco for California where they expect to locate.

Walter Wood, who now holds a position as train news boy running out of St. Louis, is in Carthage for a short visit.

Mornin',

It must be somethin’ in the stars.

I get ta feelin’ that sometimes that ever’thing mechanical is bein’ influenced by the whims of the moon, like the wives tales about plantin’ potatoes and such. These minor aggravations are not much when they come ever’ now and then, but it seems that durin’ certain phases they pile up and become all consuming.

This is the time when the lawn mower, automobile, remote control, light bulbs, telephone, and other various and sundry items become contrary. Shoe laces break, ball point pens run out of ink and the pocket calculator battery runs down.

The only solace is the faith that at some point ever’thing that can break will break and it will finally be over till the next lunar intrusion.

If I do happen to get a little down in the dumps thinkin’ about it, I imagine the three guys up in the space station. They would prob’ly don’t have much time to sweat the small stuff.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

Board Accepting Accountant Bids.

The Parks and Recreation Board voted during their regular meeting last Monday to begin accepting bids for an accountant, at least to see what it would cost. For the last several years the City has taken care of the Board’s books at no charge.

Parks and Recreation Director Alan Bull told the Board that in a conversation with City Budget Committee Chair Bill Johnson, Johnson suggested that the Board and the Budget Committee meet and see if other options were available.

Although most members of the Board expressed a willingness to have such a meeting, they felt a CPA would bring more accountability to the Board, something they feel the Council would like to see. Members felt that reducing the City’s work load and with better accountability should be in the City’s best interest.

New officers of the Board were elected to serve for the upcoming fiscal year. They are President, Paul Boutte, Vice-President, Richard Campbell, and Secretary/Treasurer, Kerry Story.

Q: Would it make sense to leave the fan on the central air running all the time? It seems that air movement would make you feel cooler even if you set the thermostat up a few degrees higher. - S. W.

A: While it is true that air in motion gives you a "wind chill" effect, you would lose another benefit of the air-conditioning system. While blowing cool air through your house, the air conditioner also removes a lot of humidity from the air in your home. If the fan keeps blowing, a lot of the moisture is blown back into the house instead of going out the condensate drain.

Super Hint: If your oilstone is starting to get gummed up, try soaking it in a little mineral spirits paint thinner. Place it in a covered container to soak for a few hours, and then clean it off.

Q: When I moved into my home, I hired a mason to put a rock-veneer wall in the den. It looks great, but he accidentally got some of the mortar on the stones. I've tried to clean it off but have had no success. What can I use? - H. M.

A: Mix a solution of 10 parts water to 1 part muriatic acid. Be sure to wear gloves and have plenty of ventilation. Muriatic acid throws off some bad fumes, and you don't want to breathe them. Also protect the surrounding areas from the acid, as it could harm them. Immediately dilute an area with more water if you do spill some. Good luck.
