"Why are you giving me a dirty look, Mrs. Behan?" The other replied, "I didn't give you a dirty look. You had it when you came." Then, there was the Irish shopkeeper who said his eggs were so fresh the hens hadn't missed them.

An advertisement appeared, "Young farmer would like to hear from young woman with tractor with a view to matrimony. Please send picture of the tractor."

"Waiter, you advertise blended coffee here, but this stuff is terrible." And the waiter replied, "It is blended. It's a blend of yesterday's and today's."

Just Jake Talkin'

Tomorrow will be the official end of the fifth year of publication of the Mornin’ Mail. For those who don’t want ta figure, we put the first Mail on the street on June 18, 1992. That comes out to about twelve hundred issues, and near that many Jake Columns. Looks like even Jake should observe a day of silence ever’ now and then.

All in all, that’s a pretty small piece of the journalism pie, but we do take some pride in the fact that we still give our readers the most informed news of Carthage, Missouri in the world.

‘Course the whole operation is entirely dependent on the cooperation of our readership and our loyal sponsors. Sponsors put up the cash, and but the readers have to support the sponsors by walkin’ in the door. Next time you pick up a Mornin’ Mail, be sure to acknowledge your appreciation for those who allow the Mail to occupy valuable counter space. Let those who advertise know you appreciate their contribution.

Tell ‘em ya saw it in the Mornin’ Mail.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

INTERESTING MELANGE.

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Dwelling on Fulton Street Damaged Good Work of the Firemen. The fire department was called out at 3:20 o'clock this afternoon by a blaze on South Fulton street. The roof of a small frame dwelling house owned by Mrs. M. J. Phillis and occupied by the family of W. H. Deamer caught fire, it is supposed, from a spark from the chimney and the entire roof was in flames when the department arrived. Mrs. Deamer built a bright fire in her cook stove this afternoon to boil some syrup and was busily engaged when a little girl, playing in the alley near the house, saw the smoke and gave the alarm. The fire department quickly responded and soon had the flames under control. Neighbors carried out all the household goods, even to the carpets, and the loss will be but slight in that particular. The roof and ceilings of the house were badly damaged, however. The building was insured for $500.

Airport Council Bill Being Processed.

The Council bill that would reopen the Myers Park Airport will be directed to the Budget/Ways and Means Committee according to Mayor Riley.

“It will eventually involve money,” said Riley in an interview with the Mornin’ Mail on last Friday.

“Although they might say it won’t cost you a dime, I think we’re all smarter than that.”

“My official position has always been, I do not personally object to the City of Carthage having an airport. My only concern has been, can the City of Carthage support an airport.

“I think as City officials, our job should be to constantly figure out what is best for the majority of the people of this community.

“What it all boils down to is there are a few well-to-do people who have pleasure airplanes, with a couple of exceptions, and it is convenient for them to have an airport in their back yard.

“If the masses of the City want to support affluent people - support their hobbies- I don’t personally object to that.”

The Super Handyman

Dear Al & Kelly: After replacing the doorbell system in our home, I found the problem with the old one. Not being one to throw away a working piece of equipment, I installed the old doorbell in my garage. Now, someone in the house can signal me out in the garage should I be needed. It’s great for alerting me to phone calls and visitors, and it makes a fine dinner bell. When you need to cut through a sheet of plywood and you want the edges to come out clean, without splintering or chipping, try using a sharp utility knife to mark your cutting line. The scored line will help cut way down on splintering.

If you are looking for a way to make wood just slide over your metal tool table, try sprinkling a little baby powder on the table before using it. The powder adds just enough lubrication, and it won’t mar the wood like a wax or oil might. You can increase your workshop storage space if you have exposed wall studs. If you are going to hang pegboard, hinge it on one side instead of just screwing it to the wall. You can hang tools on hooks or nails inside the wall cavity behind the pegboard and also hang items on both sides of the pegboard. That way, you get more than twice the storage space.
