INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

The Synod Closed.

The state synod of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church concluded its labors at 1 o’clock in the morning and adjourned to meet again at Sedalia next year. The meeting was continued so late to accommodate several delegates who were compelled to catch the 3:38 train for the north and who, of course, must remain until the adjournment.

A resolution of thanks expressing the gratitude of the synod the Westminster Presbyterian church, the Y. M. C. A., the people of Carthage, the newspapers, and Rev. J. H. Curry, was passed.

The delegates were very much pleased with Carthage, and on every hand expressions of admiration could be heard. Most of the delegates have returned to their homes but some few are left in the city yet. Rev. F. P. Flanigan, of Ft. Worth, Texas, will remain over until Sunday and preach both morning and evening for Rev. J. H. Curry.

FAA Approval Recommended.

The Public Works Committee last Wednesday evening learned that the Federal Aviation Administration will not be able to act on the City’s application to reopen Myers Airport for at least six to eight weeks. Assistant to the Engineer Joe Butler told the Committee that a representative of the FAA suggests not reopening without approval.

Butler was asked how important the FAA approval was to the City.

Butler said that the FAA representative informed him that this could have "a possible negative impact" on grants, loans, or assistance in the future.

Mayor Riley posted his intentions to veto the 6-4 vote by the Council to reopen the Myers Memorial Airport following the last Council meeting. Riley is expected to present his reasons for the veto at tonight’s City Council meeting. Seven votes are required to override a veto.

Council members Lujene Clark, Bill Fortune, Bill Johnson, and Nolan Henry voted against the November 3rd reopening.

Clark referred to the proposal, initiated by Charlie Bastin, as a "pitiful excuse for a bill" in a meeting last week.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

The editorial in last Thursday’s evenin’ paper about the "dark side" of City government seemed to be more of a cry for enlightenment than a condemnation of City officials.

No doubt sittin’ in the editorial ivory tower makes one feel a little out of touch with what’s actually goin’ on in the real world.

Even the evenin’ paper’s much repeated "key people" quote was picked up out of the Joplin Globe, the result of a reporter actually talkin’ face to face with a City official. Not just a quick phone call before deadline.

Any paper worth it’s salt should relish the idea of somethin’ to be documented and investigated. Sittin’ ‘round whimperin’ like a whipped pup isn’t an honorable or effective influence on public opinion.

My suggestion for anyone wantin’ to know what’s goin’ on in local government is to actually show up at a meetin’ or two. This especially applies to those members of the media in control of editorial comment.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

Q: After turning on our heating system, we wonder if the thermostat is accurate, because the house seems too warm. How can we check the thermostat? - T. D.

A: Use masking tape to attach a thermometer to the wall next to the thermostat. Be sue the thermometer is accurate and not influenced by any outside heat source, such as a bright light or nearby television. Give it about 15 minutes to stabilize. If the readings differ by more than a couple of degrees, either recalibrate the thermostat or replace it.

Q: What can be done to stop the static electricity that gives me a shock every time I touch a doorknob in our home? - G. D.

A: The problem is low humidity. You can put containers of water around to evaporate, use a spray that would put mist into the air or get a humidifier. The units can be freestanding or attached to your heating system.

Dear Al & Kelly:

We put in a brick-paver patio. Our neighbor showed us a little trick. We put used motor oil over the surface to help seal it and give it a little character. It’s been several months, and the shrubs planted around the sides of the patio don’t show any signs of damage. I was worried about that. - B. H.

You should worry about the oil runoff, as it is considered pollution. So, use only enough oil to coat the surface.
