"You know, I think there’s something wrong with my boss’ eyes."

"How’s that?"

"When I went into his office this morning he asked me three times where my hat was - and it was on my head all the time."

"Charlie plays a fair game of golf, doesn’t he?"

"Yes - if you watch him.

Married at Baxter Springs.

Chas. P. Wood and Miss Emily Valentine, both well-known young people of this city, were united in marriage on Sunday, at the home of the bride’s uncle in Baxter Springs, Kansas. The license was procured at Columbus, Kansas, and the marriage was quietly performed and kept a secret for the reason that there was parental objection to the wedding on both sides. It had been the plan of the young people to keep their marriage a profound secret for a year and then make it known publicly, but it leaked out in spite of their plans. Mr. Wood is a local reporter and well-known in Carthage, being a high school graduate, a prominent member of the Carthage Light Guard, and generally well liked by all that know him. Miss Valentine is also a high school graduate, having been a member of the same class with Mr. Wood. She is a bright, pretty girl, and has a wide circle of friends.

Mall Sidewalk Upgrade.

The Public Works Committee continued to move forward on the mall sidewalk project during its regular meeting last week. They agreed on a general plan and voted to recommend to Council that a maximum of $100,000 be allotted for the renovation project. Approximately $80,000 has been budgeted for the project. The additional $20,000 would come from reserves. Only Council member J. D. Whitledge voted against the recommendation of spending up to $100,000.

"That’s way too much money," said Whitledge. "I think we need to be a little more cautious about the money we’re spending on something like this. It’s a sidewalk."

A basic, "bare bones" renovation plan had been estimated to cost about $80,000. At the previous meeting, the Committee requested that the engineering department investigate several upgrades to the plan.

The new plan presented by engineering included new lighting, greater access to water, a stenciling pattern on the concrete, and brick planters.

Mornin',

Hold on to your hats, it's the beginnin' of the Maple Leaf Festival.

Even more activities this year and additional promotion through out the region could mean a pretty excitin' week for ever'one.

The folks over at the Chamber have been goin' a little nuts tryin' to keep ever'thing goin' smoothly and seem to have a handle on the huge project.

Lyon Street 'tween Second and Central will be closed from Thursday through Sunday it appears, to make room for the Carnival that will be operatin' on the parkin' lots there.

The Circus will be out at Myers Park on the North end of the former runway. Should make for plenty of parkin' and fair access.

The dog show and other regular attractions will be on the Square on Saturday as usual.

The Chamber has gone all out this year to make the festival bigger and better. The Staff and volunteers deserve a hand.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin'.

Super Handyman.

Screwdrivers are about the most used of all tools. Here’s a great way to store them. Use a round salt box. Fill it with sand, and keep the screwdrivers with the tips poked in the sand. The sand keeps the screwdrivers upright and keeps the container from falling over. It’s easy to pull out a particular screwdriver when you need it. The sand also protects the tools. A drop or two of lightweight oil in the sand would give them even more protection.

Super Hint - If you keep a few basic tools in the trunk of the car and are tired of listening to them rattle around back there, store them in some rubber boots. The boots can keep your tools quiet, and with winter weather around the corner, the boots might come in handy.

Super Hint - To get a better seal on a half-used can of paint and keep it from drying out, put the lid on the can and then turn it upside down for a couple of seconds. The paint itself helps seal the can.

Q: We are planning to pour a new, circular concrete driveway this fall. Is there a rule of thumb on how far apart the expansion joints should be located in a circular drive? - H. H.

A: If the circular drive starts at a concrete walk, you must have an expansion joint at both ends. In between, shoot for additional joints about every eight feet or so.
