today's laugh

The new owner of a used car was driving his purchase home. He was rapidly questioning the wisdom of his bargain when an officer roared at him, "Hey! You’re blocking up traffic. Can’t you go any faster?"

"Yes, but I don’t want to leave the car," was the disgusted reply.

"When you yawn you put your hand to your mouth."

"What? And get bitten?"

"He doesn’t even know when George Washington was born. Washington was born in Virginia in 1732."

"I saw that in a book, but I thought it was the phone number."

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Carthage Young Folks Wed.

Sergeant Moore and Miss Delia Cox, both of this city, were married at Hillsboro, Texas at the home of the bride’s sister. Mr. Moore is a printer, well known here, and now holds a position as foreman on the Hill County Reformer at Hillsboro, Texas. The bride is also a Carthage girl, and went to Texas about two weeks ago to visit her sister. The relatives of the young people here seem to know but little of the marriage, although the young people have been "keeping company" for the past two years and it was currently reported that they were to be married last winter when Miss Cox went to Hillsboro to spend several weeks with her sister. Mr. and Mrs. Moore will make their home in Hillsboro.

Many Officers Will Go.

Five militia officers, whose homes are in Carthage, will join Gov. Stephens’s party at St. Louis next Thursday and go to Nashville, Tenn.

School Zone Progress.

A resolution to the school zone problem at Steadley School is in progress. Superintendent of Schools Ken Bowman talked with state officials last Friday in what he characterized as "a good, productive meeting." He said they will achieve a reduction in the speed limit.

Parents of Steadley students, concerned about the lack of a school zone on state-maintained HH Highway, had contacted State Representative Mark Elliott for help. At their request, Elliott spoke with Bowman and to state highway officials. who faced a similar situation in Carl Junction.

According to Elliott, the school district can establish a crosswalk in front of Steadley School, which then meets the requirements for a reduced speed zone. The school district is responsible for painting the area and installing the lights, and the state provides the appropriate signage.

Elliott said there is currently one student living across the road from the school, but as the area develops there will be a continuing need for safety measures such as the proposed crosswalk and school zone.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

There are a considerable number of theories ‘bout where the best information comes from. With all the high tech computers spewin’ information ‘round, some might think the internet would be a top contender.

There are still those who think that the radio is the most interestin’ information around. All those talk shows with folks callin’ in from all over.

Many would still bring the printed word in as the most reliable. There is a feelin’ that if ya put it on paper, it’s more likely ta be accurate.

Most folks these days ignore the old fashioned news media, talkin’ ta other folks. In fact, ya get more real info if ya just stand around not talkin’ at all. Down at the post office for instance, or the Police Station, maybe even at the coffee shop. That’s where the real news is bein’ talked about. That’s the real "home town" news station.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.
